Gåte at Quoin Rock is the 2019 Haute Cuisine Global Winner
QuoinRock 18-min.jpg

Gåte restaurant’s exceptional gourmet cuisine has been affirmed by triumphant wins at the World Luxury Restaurant Awards.

There is much to celebrate on the lavish Quoin Rock estate and these accolades highlight the skill of Head Chef Nicole Loubser and her team.

The World Luxury Restaurant Awards are seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the luxury restaurant industry, offering international recognition as voted by guests, travellers and industry players.

Gåte has been declared the 2019 Global Restaurant of the Year Overall Winner, and well as the 2019 Haute Cuisine Global Winner. It also secured the 2019 Molecular Cuisine Global Winner honour, plus the 2019 World Luxury Restaurant Awards’ Best Head Chef - Global Winner accolade - which recognizes sustained commitment to service excellence and outstanding achievement in the international restaurant industry.

In addition, the Knorhoek Valley estate also scooped a win for 2019 Outstanding Architecture Continent Winner: Africa.

Head Chef Nicole Loubser delineates the brilliance of top level dining at Gåte. Her artistry was honed at Jan Hendrik’s 1 star Michelin restaurant in Nice and at Salzburg’s 2 Michelin star Ikarus.

Nicole maximizes her expertise in the farm’s unusually large kitchen. “It’s a lot of fun as it’s bigger than most in terms of space as well as equipment. Gåte is cutting edge because we not only focus on molecular gastronomy, but also on fine dining. We aim to play with the senses of the guest. As such, it’s not just another wine farm but a high-end fine dining venue,” she adds.

“We focus on getting local food in, and also expensive items like truffles. We are setting up a greenhouse so we can be sustainable and have hydroponics in the kitchen for our own micro herbs and flowers.”

Gåte’s new menu launches on 1 August. “We’ve picked 14 countries to embody a taste-driven odyssey, fusing their flavours with South African cuisine.”

The fourteen-course menu can be enjoyed as a seven-course dinner, or five-course lunch menu. Lunch includes two teaser dinner dishes. Food is paired with 10 estate wines.

A Forestry of Film, Fashion, Flavour and Festivities

(Cape Town, South Africa) Queen Victoria Road was a bustle at this month’s very festive First Thursday fiesta. Migrating the festivities from the traditional Bree Street soiree of art and bar hopping to the newly manifested Art flick and Winter Night market attractions, respectively.

Queen Victoria Road runs parallel to the Company Gardens. A green tree-lined setting leading up to the planetarium nestled beside Cape Town’s Urban Oasis – 15 on Orange Hotel, Autograph Collection. Here the illustrious Quentin Tarrantino Movie Nights take place.

Situated a stone’s throw away, at 54 Queen Victoria Road, is the Botanik Social House (in the old Land Bank building) which debuted its First Thursday Night Market on July 4th. Doors opened to public at 6pm, ideal for pursuers and consumers meandering across from the previously established art avenue which kicks off at 17:00.

The venue, an indoor forestry blossoming with towering trees and greenery springing from every pocket. 36 Vendors welcomed guests to peruse and purchase a plethora of goods from clothing, accessories and jewellery to bags, beauty and even doggy beds. Says Bryan “I’m so thrilled to see my vision for this night market come to life. It was an honour to have so many wonderful vendors and exhibitors participating in this event. With such a great uptake from the attendees we’ll be expanding the culinary options even further for the upcoming night markets. It means a great deal to me to have such a positive response to a cuisine so close to my heart.”

Exalted Quoin Rock Pushes The Limits Of Creative Artistry
Gåte-Restaurant-Gate-at-Quoin-Rock-Boring-Cape-Town-Chick-7-1024x683.jpg

Since its launch in November 2018, family-owned Quoin Rock Estate has introduced a new dimension of luxury to the Cape winelands.

Elegant, chic and eye-catching, everything at Quoin Rock offers a refined experience - designer architecture and furnishings, award-winning wine, and superb molecular gastronomy at Gåte Restaurant, which pushes boundaries with arty aesthetics and a playful spirit that epitomises the theatre of food.

Quoin Rock’s exclusive use Manor House maximises sweeping views of the Simonsberg, which can also be enjoyed from the Gåte tasting lounge and terrace, and a newly-built function venue overlooking the estate vineyards.

The farm’s transformation has taken place over six years, when the Gaiduk family purchased it in 2012. Managing Director Denis Gaiduk explains: “My dad Vitaly Gaiduk is a wine enthusiast and as his collection grew, he decided to ‘paint his own painting’. He was looking to buy a wine farm in Italy but saw this amazing farm and fell in love with it. It took several years to improve the vineyards, with the aim being to create wine which would compete on the international market. Our Quoin Rock Shiraz 2015 is already a Top 12 Shiraz in South Africa – and this is a beginning. We want to create something big, bold and powerful.”

Denis’ wish is for guests to quieten and savour their excellent wines. “I want to be a wine lounge, because if you’re drinking an exceptional wine it can’t just be quick.”

What makes Quoin Rock so inimitable is the uniqueness of the terrior, the winemaking techniques and mountain views. “This place is built to enjoy the beauty of the surrounds - at daytime for people to have more of a wine experience and at night to have more of a food experience,” he adds.

Helmed by Head Chef Nicole Loubser fronting a team of 11 chefs, Gåte has taken innovative dining to new heights. The novelty of dining here includes a fourteen-course menu presented in cube format.

Nicole brings expertise acquired at Jan Hendrik’s 1 star Michelin restaurant in Nice and Salzburg’s 2 star Ikarus. “Dining at Gåte is cutting edge because we focus not just on molecular gastronomy, but also on fine dining. We aim to play with the senses.”

Part of the joy of this superb gourmet indulgence is the artistic presentation. “When I plate, it’s like a canvas.” Guests can choose from a seven-course dinner, or a five-course lunch menu. Lunch includes two teaser dinner dishes.

Food is paired with 10 estate wines, which includes two bubbles. Winemaker Jacques Maree explains: “Our wine has the ability to pair fantastically with any food. We’ve got grapes from Elim and Stellenbosch which give two different fruit profiles.”

“The Simonsberg is your classical Bordeaux area, so the result is more new world, bigger structures and fruit forward.” Quoin Rock also does a grappa.

Special events and weddings are superbly catered for in a function hall accommodating parties of 150 to 200 people, and offers three catering options.

The beautiful Manor House epitomizes the opulent Quoin Rock lifestyle. In keeping with opulent villas popular for multi-age family travel, this exclusive, tranquil haven accommodates 14 people. Features include a honeymoon suite and garden designed by Francesca Watson. Packages range from bed and breakfast to full board for a minimum stay of two nights.

Tarantino's Cult Classic Screenings on First Thursday
2V0A6717.jpg

First Thursday Cult Classic Series at 15 On Orange, Autograph Collection

Tarantino’s films are known for intricately woven individual stories with engaging characters and on-screen violence. Quentin has been turning heads since his first film ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and has continued to do so with all of his films including the upcoming and much anticipated ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ starring Leonardo Dicaprio, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.

Tarantino’s feature films have received countless awards and praises, 15 On Orange Hotel will be showcasing Tarantino’s all-time classics and fan favourites on First Thursday in July and August 2019.

Without a doubt and an easy choice for the second Cult Classic screening will be the award-winning Pulp Fiction with a star-studded cast by the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis to name a few. The film revolves around two hitmen with a fondness for philosophical discussions. In this ultra-hip crime movie, their storyline is interwoven with those of their boss/gangster, his actress wife, a struggling boxer, master fixer and an anxious pair of armed robbers.

For the next screening the chosen film is Inglourious Basterds, which might be his most entertaining one of them all, with scenes of high-tension verbal sparring and scalp-smashing mayhem, all erupting when Tarantino’s band of vigilantes (led by Brad Pitt’s drawling lieutenant Aldo Raine) gun down their German rivals in a blaze of glory. Basterds is also notable for introducing the world to Christoph Waltz, who won the Oscar for his performance as the silver-tongued sociopath Colonel Landa, one of the most compelling film villains in history. This film left a distinguished mark in Tarantino's filmography.

Guests can expect to watch their all-time favourite movies in luxurious comfort with an elegantly furnished lounge-style cinema, mouth-watering movie box meals and artfully crafted; Wixworth Gin welcome drinks. Cocoafair will be offering guests decadent hot chocolate halfway through the film. This all-inclusive sensorial experience only costs R185 per person. Seating is limited and bookings in advance essential. Book your tickets now on Quicket (https://qkt.io/cultclassics) or email melissa@redcarpetconcepts.co.za. for more information.
