Quoin Rock Vine Dried Sauvignon Blanc pure liquid gold

Quoin Rock 20_08_06 008-min.jpg

(Cape Town). Quoin Rock Wine Estate’s unique terroir has facilitated the creation of a range of exceptional Quoin Rock and Namysto wines. The release of their Vine Dried Sauvignon Blanc 2019 once again raises the bar with a sensational addition that can only be likened to liquid gold.

The winemaker’s tasting notes best describe this sublime release: “Aromas of dried pineapple and mango with roasted sweet spices all complement a fascinating and refreshing palate of apricot pips and honey.”

A phenomenal wine to end dinner with, the Vine Dried Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect companion to the stellar Quoin Rock range.

Ideally served chilled at around 6-8 ̊C, it can also be enjoyed as an aperitif. Its character comes to the fore when paired as a complement to foie gras, fruit-based desserts and cheese, and can even be used as an ice-cream topping.

Viticulturist Nico Walters explains the meticulous and time-consuming process the vineyard team use to ensure that the desired end result is achieved: “Our Vine Dried Sauvignon Blanc is made in a rather unique way. Each individual grape bunch is pinched at the stalk to stop the flow of water and nutrients. This process causes the bunches to dry whilst hanging on the vine.”

“This takes approximately one month and results in a bunch filled with flavour and sugar. This method is applied to one particular Sauvignon Blanc vineyard, selected because of its exposure to the sun, which contributes the rich tropical flavours” he adds.

During the vinification process, “Whole-bunch grapes were cold-soaked for 12 hours, then pressed-off to holding tanks and left to settle for two days. The clean juice was racked to old French oak barrels and inoculated with select yeast strains. Fermentation was stopped through filtration, to achieve a certain sugar level. Maturation in old 225L barrels lasted five months.”

Right from the outset, Quoin Rock has demonstrated their quest to perfect every facet of this iconic estate. Their wins include achieving Double Gold for Namysto Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon at the Six Nations Wine Challenge; scooping three Golds at the 2019 Michaelangelo Wine & Spirit Awards; plus four World Luxury Restaurant Awards.

The estate’s Vine Dried Sauvignon Blanc is simply yet another triumph for the Gaiduk family.

RED! THE GALLERY ‘GALA FOR GOOD’ CHARITY AUCTION

(Tokai, Cape Town). On 28 February 2020, RED! The Gallery hosted the ‘Gala for Good’ charity auction with a large of the proceeds going to The Spirit Education Foundation, which raises money for educating underprivileged children.

Magnificent art by the likes of Cliff Brown, David Thorpe, Junior Fungai, Michael Waters, David Kuijers, Shelagh Price, Derric van Rensburg, Wakaba Mutheki and Wilma Du Toit was showcased at the auction. Complimentary wines by Lomond and delectable bowl dining by the RED! The Gallery Café was on offer whilst listening to ambient jazz tunes by Alan Cameron and Simon Annett.

The charismatic, internationally recognized auctioneer, Philip Powell, lead the auction, with co-owner Nikki Nepheritie Jade at the evening’s master of ceremonies, raising R20 000.00 cash proceeds for The Spirit Education Foundation.

In addition, Nepheritie Jade directly donated her NJCI Neuro-Linguistic Program (NLP) IP to the foundation so all their students have the opportunity to learn NLP; Giving learners the opportunity to discover and utilize personal excellence.

Red! The Gallery is known for its noteworthy auctions, but should you want to drop by the gallery they are also the perfect spot for any meal of the day. “Our specialty is coffee and breakfast,” says RED! Gallery co-owner, David Endean. “We have a wide variety to choose from and we do it well! It’s casually comfortable and unhurried… a place where people can sit for a long time and chill.”

Signature Breakfast highlights include a delectable Happiness Bowl with fresh fruit, double thick yogurt, homemade granola and chia seeds (vegan options available); the Camp Fire with three free-range eggs scrambled with bacon, tomato, red onion, cheddar, and fresh chili served in a pan with toast; and the Shazzy, which is rye toast, cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato and onion salsa with baby spinach and a free-range poached egg.

Chef Divan Engelbrecht has been directing the RED! Café kitchen for 10 years. Once a familiar face at Kalk Bay’s Olympia Café, his standout dishes include great curries, lamb shank and mind-blowing burgers.

In addition to the delicious all-day breakfasts, lunches and high teas they’re legendary for, Thursday Nights at Red! is open for dinner service from 6 pm – 10 pm, accompanied by live music performances throughout the evening. “We have a live jazz ensemble and offer a new and exciting menu each week. It’s home food, not fast food, which patrons love.”

Wide range of eye-catching local artworks

Wall-to-wall art lends a colorful, creative ambiance to the bright and airy RED! space. “People like our place because there’s an energy and vibe that’s quite different. The coffee shop drives the gallery – it’s a vehicle to drive feet into the gallery,” adds David, who has accumulated a vast collection over the last 25 years.

“It’s all about sourcing really good art and we’ve got a very eclectic mix. We promote a lot of up and coming artists and keep it modern, but it’s a good general mix that caters to everybody.”

The venue also hosts functions and events such as birthday parties and offers art hanging and packaging services. People can also hire art and twice a year there’s a 50% art sale.

RED! also hosts paint jams, and charity-driven learning events paired with three-course dinner buffets and stages charity art auctions every three months.

RED! the gallery charity auction for Spirit Foundation

Best art at the best price at RED! the gallery charity auction

(Cape Town). David Endean and partner Nepheritie live and breathe art, Nepheritie’s influence as a strategic business development partner together with her passion for social development has added a special twist to the mix. An avid aesthete, David has amassed a vast private collection over the last 25 years. Many of the pieces are spread across their two RED! the gallery venues located in Bree Street, Cape Town, and at Steenberg Village in Tokai.

While both operate as vibrant galleries offering professional art services, they also double up as cafés serving delicious all-day breakfasts, lunches and high teas.

Buoyed on by the maxim, ‘Love of Art, Art of Food’, David and Nepheritie continue to facilitate a creative environment which is open to all. Much of the success of the RED! the gallery concept can be attributed to David’s drive to make art easily accessible and Nepherite’s innate altruistic passion to serve humanity through the expression and experience of art. “If we had our way, people wouldn’t go to a normal gallery as it can be somewhat intimidating, this is why we have created a sophisticated yet non formal space that you can walk into, enjoying this beautiful ambience,” David says.

“Most of our collection is local and it’s semi-investment art. Half the pieces are decorative and the other is serious future investment art. I’m addicted to buying art!”

‘Gala for Good’ charity auction inspired By Nepheritie

Popular paint jams, charity driven learning events paired with three-course dinner buffets and Thursday Night Dinner Escapes are regular RED! The Gallery highlights, but it’s their charity based auctions that open up the stage for art lovers looking for their next great acquisition.

“We have an auction every three months. They’re generally a win for everybody, especially the buyers,” he says. “Giving younger collectors, first time buyers and art enthusiasts an opportunity to acquire art at a good deal.” We usually have about 65 paintings on display. For our upcoming auction, on 28 February 2020, at 6.00pm, Philip Powell will be the auctioneer. He’s one of the best in the country – he’s witty and knows our stuff well. Nepheritie  will MC.”

“A great selection of art will be going under the hammer. The art will sell at half the price, so I have to find the best looking art I can find at the best price.”

Expect to see work by the likes of Cliff Brown, David Thorpe, Junior Fungai, Michael Waters, David Kuijers, Shelagh Price, Derric van Rensburg, Wakaba Mutheki and Wilma Du Toit. There will also be sculptures by artists such as Jean Doyle, but the work will predominantly be oils and acrylics on canvass.

A portion of all RED! The Gallery auction proceeds always go to a charity since Nepheritie has been involved.

These have included The Roxy Davis Foundation. A percentage of proceeds of the upcoming event will  go to The Spirit Foundation, which raises money for educating underprivileged children. Ian Kilbride is chairman and co-founder of The Spirit Foundation, which was set up as a charitable educational trust in 1994.

Tickets are R180 per head and can be booked at  https://www.quicket.co.za/events/97777-red-the-gallery-gala-for-good-charity-auction/, which also secures patrons reserved seating. Auction tickets include food and wine.

Lou Lou's Rich in Flavour

Fezzy Fridays ANA_7687.JPG

Rich, flavourful and absolutely delish – Lou Lou’s signature dishes are guaranteed to impress

Located in Green Point’s iconic Cape Quarter, Lou Lou’s has become a fixture on Cape Town’s entertainment scene since its launch several years ago. The restaurant-come-bar has a palpable atmosphere of excitement that extends from Owner James Truter and his team right down to every guest. At Lou Lou’s, there’s a little something for every soul. If the music doesn’t pull on your heartstrings, the delicious cuisines from around the world will get you – or one of the 52 cocktails on Lou Lou’s extensive drinks menu.

“I fell in love with Lou Lou’s instantly,” says James longingly as he reminisces on taking over Lou Lou’s nearly a year ago. “I loved the look, the feel, and I thought the potential of it was pretty amazing – plus it’s in a brilliant area,” he adds. As part of the Cape Quarter’s ‘curation of art and attitude’, Lou Lou’s certainly brings more than a little attitude to the table. Here, you can always find an event, a place to feel at home and a personal experience that guarantees your return time and again.

Delectable dishes that will get your taste buds singing

Lou Lou’s certainly goes the extra mile to ensure everything on the menu is conjured up with their clientele in mind. And, with a host of incredible tapas dishes to share with friends, it’s not hard to see this. Not only does Lou Lou’s provide guests with a wide variety of fusion cuisines to choose from – think Asian, Italian and even Portuguese flavours – but the portions are healthy, giving you more bang for your buck.

One of Lou Lou’s popular signature dishes is the Seared Spiced Tuna starter, which is thinly sliced, rolled in seven secret spices and served with a tasty lime mayo. “It’s absolutely to die for and people really love it,” says James, adding that visitors love the Arancini, too. These are scrumptious mushroom and truffle risotto balls served on a bed of creamy parmesan sauce – bursting with so much flavour, it will leave you wanting more. Also, of note on the starter menu is the Pork Belly, offered up with egg fried rice, hoisin and ginger dressing. Guests will be pleasantly surprised to find that the starter portions are generous and ideal for those in search of a lighter meal.

When it comes to mains, the Thai Beef Salad is a firm favourite, says Chef Chantal. “It’s a cold salad with a hot steak cut over the top served with a Thai chilli sauce on the side.” This, and many of their other salad options – Caprese, Chicken Caesar, and Peasant Salad, for instance – are hits during the summer months when diners are in search of something light, cool and refreshing.

Another signature main on Lou Lou’s menu is Linguine Al Gamberi: deshelled wild Argentinian prawns with a touch of napolitana sauce, a drop of cream and a hint of chili, garlic and parsley. As the name suggests, it’s a piquant dish that will get you salivating in no time and with Lou Lou’s commitment to quality, your prawns are guaranteed to be the best and freshest in town. In keeping with all things spicy, Rigatoni Vesuvio is one for the books, says James. Other standouts on the menu include the spectacular vegan dish; Cauliflower Risotto, the Norwegian Salmon, and the melt-in-your-mouth Wagyu Beef Burger.

Not too long ago, Lou Lou’s added South African inspired dishes to the menu. The star of the show would have to be their fish and chips, while dishes like Bobotie and Chicken Malay Curry do very well with both local and international diners. Chef Chantal strives for perfection by sourcing all her spices from Bo-Kaap.

A drinks menu bursting with creativity

There’s nothing like an incredible drink to wash Lou Lou’s flavourful food down – and they have a rather exceptional and comprehensive drinks menu. With more than 50 cocktails to choose from, an extensive list of imported spirits, and a range of local wines and beers to boot, everyone is sure to leave happy.

Lou Lou’s drink specials include a sundowner half-price gin specials on the newly launched Fezzy Fridays from January to April. DJs will be firing up deep hypnotic grooves from 17h00 till closing time. Hot DJs on the decks include Tamara Chetty, Roy Hendrix, DJ Dani B, Dino Moran and Groovy G’s, to name a few.

Crafting a full and personalised experience for guests

These days, people go out for the excitement, to try something new, to have fun, says James. “The food, the atmosphere, the people all play a role in this,” he explains, “You want to go somewhere that you’re remembered. This my staff does well and that makes Lou Lou’s such a great experience.”

Since its launch, Lou Lou’s has been committed to the customer experience. Both James and Chef Chantal cannot stress this point enough. They believe in building long term relationships with everyone they meet – whether it be a guest, an artist performing at their venue or a food supplier. “It’s very important to me that they work well with you, that they respect your customers as you respect them,” says James. “For example, Lilli Slaptsilli did a Pink Bingo night last year that was a huge success – absolute, rip-roaring fun – and we’re doing it again on the 21st of February. There’s almost a connection of friendship, and that’s exactly what you want.”

In fact, Lou Lou’s is so committed to the customer experience that they take ‘going the extra mile’ very seriously. They sit with their guests and listen to their comments, taking it on board to ensure that they deliver 100% happiness to each person who walks through their doors. “Learning about the different things that people find important that you never gave a second thought to is a huge thing,” James adds.

Chef Chantal agrees. “I think the ideal experience is having a close relationship with your customers. You know what they want, you can please them, and they’re welcome anytime. We’re happy to even give them a dish (if they really want) that’s not on the menu this season but was a few seasons ago.”

There’s always something worth celebrating at Lou Lou’s

Crafting an atmosphere of fun is at the core of what Lou Lou’s brings to the Cape Quarter. They have a close relationship with all their neighbours and as such, they collaborate and feed off each other in order to create great experiences for visitors.

An example of this is celebrity chef Jenny Morris, also known as ‘The Giggling Gourmet’, who runs cooking classes just next door to Lou Lou’s. “She sends the after parties to us because she closes at 11pm and we’re open until 2am,” James explains.

This summer, Lou Lou’s plans to take over the whole square and host a market together with their Cape Quarter neighbours. “We won’t have any outside food vendors, but rather will showcase ourselves as a square. What Lou Lou’s will do for the market is specialise in some street food for the day. Our menu is tapas-based with Italian, Asian and Portuguese influence, so we will do some street food-style tapas.”

Commitment to quality and affordability

Thanks to Lou Lou’s dedication to the whole experience of eating (or drinking) out, guests can be sure that no matter what, they can expect to have a good time that doesn’t break the bank. With James’ ability to craft a world-class experience and Chef Chantal’s innovation in the kitchen, there’s nothing stopping Lou Lou’s from becoming your home away from home.

Since its launch just over a year ago, Gåte at Quoin Rock has established itself as a trendsetter in the fine-dining world. Mixing art, science and passion has brought them thus far, so it’s no wonder that this beautifully designed restaurant continues to push boundaries in the culinary arena with the introduction of a signature cocktail menu that takes diners on a trip around the world.

Quoin Rock is perhaps better known for its vibrant collection of wines, or its creative molecular gastronomy at Gåte. Now guests will have a whole new reason to visit with their emerging cocktail culture and tempting tea pairings.

The seven signature drinks will be paired with the evening dining experience.  The experience also includes a signature welcome drink – a gold-dusted flute with Campari and sour apple, topped with a festive MCC. The warm colour is meant to resemble the arches as you enter the restaurant, while the gold dust is reminiscent of Gåte’s elegance and opulence.

Aptly named after the delectable dishes they are paired with; each cocktail is designed with careful thought around the flavours in the meal. With inspiration from around the world, diners travel through Italy, France, Canada, Austria, Japan, Greece, and Namibia, with ingredients as diverse as the countries mentioned – Aperol, Martell Congac, White Port, Sake, and Namysto Strawberry Wine.

Quoin Rock has partnered with Molecular Bars to bring this delightful pairing experience to diners. According to the mixologists behind each drink, complimentary flavours are chosen that assist and boost the flavours in the meal, but still create a well-balanced beverage.

Dino Batista, Director of Molecular Bars says; “Our big goal when it came to creating the seven signature cocktails along with an arrival drink was to ensure that patrons have a memorable experience, specifically when they get to the last couple of courses.” Creating smaller portions with beautiful flavour profiles was our aim”

For those less than intrigued by the prospect of so many alcoholic drinks – however small the portions – Gåte offers the option of serving their seven signature cocktails as mocktails. And, for the more health-conscious, they also have some tantalising tea pairings in store for guests.

Gåte has mastered the art of pairing tea with food, as it is just as important as knowing how to pick the wine for a delicious meal, or which seasonings work well with which dishes. Gåte‘s tea pairings is a unique culinary experience for those looking for something out of the ordinary.

Embark on a journey around the world from the comfort of your own elegant chair at the ever-refined Gåte. For an evening of dining and drinks pairings, these signature cocktails will set you back by R650. Only seven drinks will be served regardless of whether you enjoy a seven or a 14-course meal. For daytime diners, cocktails can be ordered separately at R115-R160 per drink.
