Building a successful business rooted from its niche

Discovering your niche

In any business establishing your niche is what gives you the competitive advantage and in turn brings in new business, but how do businesses discover this? First off, identify where your passion lies “It’s important to start by identifying your goals / dreams and desired lifestyle; define what interests you and what kind of life you wish to live and structure your business around that,” says Allen.

A brand should be innovative and unique. It’s important to identify the USP’s and communicate them accurately, making sure they are honest and sensible. “Our unique 360◦ approach, powered by below and through the line marketing, is what sets us apart” explains Allen.

Part of establishing your brand is the identification of your specific target audience. Beginning with market research – know exactly whom you wish to speak to and think carefully about how you plan to grab their attention. PR, marketing, social media, advertising and events are generally the best ways to generate leads. “Without leads a company will find it pretty difficult to leverage any conversion rates.” iterates Allen. Furthermore, it’s vital that the brand offers customers a guarantee. “In order for someone to invest in your brand they need to feel a sense of trust and reassurance. Always ensure your guarantee is achievable and forthright”.

Once you have discovered the underlying passion that drives the need for your business venture; defined your brand and pinpointed your target audience the next step is getting the ball rolling. Thoughts plus actions equal results. According to action coach, Bradley J. Sugars, SMART goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. “Putting goals into motion requires a lot of planning,” adds Allen. “Not only has this been a strategic mega-step in the establishment of Red Carpet Concepts, but a very regular part of our service offering. Each client’s communications strategy is mapped out over a six-month period, detailing every element of each campaign along with the relative dates for execution.”

Much of a company’s successes is powered by a well-structured work force. States Allen: “Be sure to hire the right staff for the correct positions with clearly defined roles, responsibilities and targets; candidates passionate about the company or brand’s specified niche. A good plan and infrastructure in place will result in a well-oiled cog.” The team should be self-sufficient, able to run day to day procedures with a sturdy management system in place. “Step in when there’s fire; otherwise concentrate on working on the company rather than in it.”

In order to benchmark one needs to have measurement tools in place. To reach optimum profitability one must always have facts and figures to reflect on. Allen advises: “always review the results. Look at what worked and what didn’t work for your niche. Then benchmark to improve based on the information and measurements at hand. Keeping your finger on the pulse will assist you in staying that crucial step ahead.”

Why your website matters

by Darryl Gouws

Whether you’re a start-up, established small business or professional service provider your website is key to your brand’s future growth.

It costs less than you think

People often think that having a website requires a lot of money and that the upkeep is too much work. As domain hosting, cloud storage, SEO and design costs have all dropped considerably the initial and monthly cost of having your own, fully customisable website is much lower than you might anticipate.

Content is king

Having a blog section on your website with original content is a sure-fire way to drive traffic to your website from social media accounts. A blog is also a great way to engage with your clients and potential future business by giving insight into your interests and company ethos in an informal and friendly approach.

Mobile matters

It is estimated that there are now more mobile gadgets in the world than people with mobile internet usage recently surpassing traditional computer access in first world countries whilst developing countries have a very high percentage of users with mobile devices being their primary access point to the world wide web. It is therefore imperative that your website is optimised for these devices and that the design is responsive whether being viewed on a smartphone, tablet or computer.

It legitimises your brand

A website with a custom domain for your brand immediately legitimizes your business as users often cross-check multiple online sources such as social media and websites when stumbling across new companies. Likewise a business email address in the format of name@yourcompany.com certainly looks more professional than an old Gmail account that you started when you were younger.

Your website, your rules

As social media companies update their terms and conditions on a frequent basis few people actually take the time to familiarise themselves with what it all means. To ensure that your intellectual property is protected it is advisable to only upload sensitive information to your own website whereby you are not authorising certain social media parties full access to your media and information.

Red Carpet Concepts has a range of online solutions for start-ups and small businesses at costs tailored to your budget.

Why PR is essential for the hospitality industry

interiors-hospitality-lifestyle-novotel-hotel-montreal-006.jpg

January 2018, a new year, a fresh start for many. For hoteliers this marks the centre point of the hospitality season, and a good time to consolidate strategies for the year ahead. Being such a highly competitive field, an effective public relations (PR) strategy is paramount, as this will enable long term, sustained messaging to assist in keeping the establishment top of mind.

With new developments constantly on the rise increasing rooms for occupancy, compounded by a shared economy with the likes of Airbnb, the hospitality industry, globally, is extremely competitive. Hotel public relations is a highly effective marketing tool for generating visibility and telling the story of the guest experience and connecting with your audience.

South Africa, and Cape Town more specifically, enjoys a consistent ebb and flow of tourism and a generous influx of locals visiting the Cape to relish its yield of world-class vineyards, beaches and restaurant offerings. However, with a recent drop of 28% in the travel and tourism sector, largely due to the repercussions of our drought, the time for hoteliers to sit up and get proactive is now!

Says Jade Allen, Managing Director of hospitality and lifestyle communications agency, Red Carpet Concepts: “Formulating a six to 12-month forecast is essential for establishments to align strategies with their consumers’ interests and curiosities. Announcements, news releases, and events should be carefully spaced apart so there is no period of inactivity through the year. A strong PR partnership, with a field specialist, is highly recommended for the conceptualization, curation and implementation of a long-term communication strategy. Taking into consideration seasonal temperaments and travel climates an equipped PR agency will assist in measuring and tapping into consumer interests to help drive campaigns and secure desired results.”

High and low seasons must both be accounted for, with packages and season specials to attract bookings even during the slow months. Corporate or family packages, couple’s getaways and local travel specials are always a win. Off-season is also an opportune time to invite travel and lifestyle media to stay at the establishment and fully experience everything it has to offer in order to report on their first-hand experiences. Readers tend to gravitate towards reviews rather than advertisements as they carry a greater weight in integrity and honesty.

Other interesting topics to map out along the annual forecast to create hype and accrue bookings include: new restaurants or restaurant specials, seasonal menu launches, hotel awards, new appointments, spa specials, interior design upgrades, as well as special events and experiences. Collectively these types of talk factor topics keep the brand active and relevant in a competitive space, specifically pertaining to the luxury hotel business being predominantly service based.

“Brand journalism and content marketing must be newsworthy, relevant and drive a strong call-to-action. In the current climate of our tech driven world it is important to ensure that strategy covers traditional press channels of print and broadcast as well as the digital sphere, where social media has largely taken an upper hand in our personal and business engagements. As more traditional PR methods tend to be more timeous, online media portals, digital magazines and blogs are platforms which offer us immediate results. Thus a good mix of sustained messaging across a multitude of platforms is essential for sustained messaging” adds Allen.

Gaining visibility in the hospitality industry means being creative in what you plan, as well as what you promote. Content curation or content creation must be meaningful. Hoteliers should be investing in placing stories with press releases, diary listings, social media and direct marketing channels to enjoy a healthy return on investment. For well written, compelling stories journalists and copy writers key to the field will have a better understanding of the internal workings of the media and a good harness of what will grasp the customers’

Mediterranean Dining at Its Best

The V&A Waterfront’s yacht basin recently upgraded with a tasteful (in both the literal and figurative sense) addition to its five-star setting. Nestled beside the world renowned Two Oceans Aquarium, family owned Mediterranean Style restaurant, Vista Marina, is fast catching guests’ attention with its aromatic cuisine and unsurpassed location.

Dappled amongst an array of the country’s finest hotel’s like the Cape Grace, One & Only, Victoria and Alfred and Queen Victoria to name a few, Vista is by no argument in prime positioning. Overlooking the luxury yachts, Vista’s alfresco dining option, along with its vast indoor venue (reminiscent of the inside of a grand, modern luxury liner) both offer breakfast, lunch and dinner seating.

“We’re a family owned and run business. It’s important for us, to ensure that all our guests feel welcomed when they come to Vista Marina. Through our combined heritage we naturally gravitated towards Mediterranean cuisine, the energy of the Mediterranean, clean flavours and fresh product, that’s what we want our guests to experience,” says Vista Marina owner, Thelma Francisco.

Vista Marina doubles up as both restaurant and multifaceted function venue for premium private and corporate functions, having hosted an array of events from The Audi South African Wine Awards to The Red Carpet Fashion Show and the Bokeh Film Festival, to name a few.

Inside, the restaurant can seat 120 guests, making use of the stage table for presentations and live performances. The stage table can also be used for smaller groups and can seat a maximum of 16 guests. For groups of 50 guests or less three main course dining options are made available. Groups of 50 or more have a choice between two main course options preselected by guests in advance. Cocktail style events can comfortably host 200 guests inside with a substantial selection of delicious canapes to choose from.

Adjacent to the restaurant, is the glass enclosed conservatory deck with panoramic views of the Marina and Table Mountain, perfect for breakfast, brunch, high tea or cocktail events, and can host up to 200 guests. For a super-premium VVIP experience, the Vista Marina Blue Room is ideal for lavish private dining - a long wooden table, seating twelve guests in navy blue velvet wing back chairs. An opulent gold and black handmade crystal chandelier suspends over dining area, offering a somewhat royal dining experience with a nautical flair at its finest.

“We are honoured to be elected as the official after party venue for the 19th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) this March, 2018. The finest jazz artists from around South Africa will be visiting and performing at our venue” remarks Francisco. “We also have an array of other very exciting events lined up throughout the year. In addition to our monthly Deetlefs Date Nights featuring Ricky Botsis, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter weekend and Christmas in July (during the first half of the year) we’ll also be hosting regular performances with various musicians, jazz artists and djs throughout. Other exciting events we have lined up include food and wine pairing evenings during winter, where our chef and leading winemakers will curate beautiful five to eight course tasting menus.”

The Mediterranean inspired menu at Vista incudes dishes such as the Linguine frutti di mare dressed with succulent mussels, prawns, baby calamari and the freshest catch of fish in a putanesca sauce; St Tropez bouillabaisse with line fish, black mussels, prawns, baby calamari, doused in a classic bouillabaisse broth topped with crostini; or the classic hake and chips with a fresh Greek side salad. “My personal favourite, and a dish that is close to my heart is the slow roasted lamb shank with crispy roast potatoes and cucumber riata. It’s an age-old recipe passed down through my family from generation to generation” says Francisco.

Other dishes that stand out on the menu include the lamb chops plated with polenta gnocchi, roast veg, wild mushroom and garlic jus; woodfired lamb or chicken souvlaki in a honey and herb marinade served with cos lettuce, grilled veg, olives, pita bread and tzatziki, and a selection of gourmet pizzas for something easy and on the go. On a sweeter note, the traditional Greek dish - Baklava with pistachio ice cream, and Vista’s salted caramel, popcorn semifreddo with honey roasted brazil nuts.

The venue lends itself ideally towards the corporate sector for quiet lunch meetings and functions, with the convenience of being in the central Waterfront vicinity, yet slightly out the major hustle and bustle. Though, being right beside the Two Oceans Aquarium it doubles up as a great family destination too. “We have taken family dining into consideration with a delicious assortment of kiddies dishes” adds Francisco. “It’s such a great outing for families to experience the excitement of a world class aquarium excursion before relaxing beside the sea for a hearty meal right next door.” Two Oceans Aquarium ticket holders are also privy to 10% off their bill.

Adding another element of luxury to this sea-facing, Mediterranean cuisine restaurant, is the Vista Marina yacht, which accommodates up to 12 pax at a time. The yacht can be hired in advance for cruises around the Atlantic Seaboard, with private catering and beverages provided by Vista Marina.

To experience this St Tropez style setting for a la carte dining, private or corporate events or a trip on the Vista yacht, contact info@vistamarina.co.za or call 021 814 4510.
